About New Vista High School
New Vista is a small school located on the corner of 20th and Baseline in Boulder Colorado. It was created in 1993 by principal Rona Wilensky, who continues in position as of 2007. New Vista prides itself on its non-traditional format and forward-thinking approach to education. The high school helps students find their passions, through focused and unique classes, off-campus activities, and a supportive school community.
School Mission and Vision
New Vista is a diverse, supportive, and respectful community of learners. The school combines the creativity and commitment of teachers, parents, and students with the resources of the broader community. This unique high school does its best to create an environment in which excitement about learning enables students to achieve high levels of skill and knowledge. New Vista encourages and supports student self-determination and achievement within the school and beyond.
History
New Vista High School opened its doors in the Fall of 1993 with a mission \"to break the mold\" of conventional secondary school practice. A small public high school of choice, serving a heterogeneous student body, having two goals. The first being, every high school must educate students in the conventional subjects and prepare them for a variety of post secondary programs, including highly competitive colleges and universities. The second goal is more unusual and defines the unique environment, New Vista helps each student identify and pursue interests or talents at which they are genuinely motivated to excel.
Fourteen years later, New Vista is meeting both goals. The 2001 School Accountability Reports issued by the State of Colorado awarded it the second highest performance rating. In the rank ordering of schools, New Vista students scores earned them a 32nd place out of 355 in public high schools.
With regard to the second goal of supporting talent development in all students, New Vista has had success across the board. It has challenged exceptionally strong students, and has been able to succeed with some of the at-risk students who have come to it. The most remarkable effect has been with students who were neither stars nor failures before they came to New Vista. Students who were thought of as just average, are expected to earn high grades, and find the way or ways in which they are extraordinary.
Academics
As a non-traditional school, NVHS approaches academics differently. It runs on a quarter system; every nine weeks the schedule changes. There are no Advanced Placement classes, IB Program, or weighted grades. Anything below a B-(70%) is a failing grade. Class subjects are varied, allowing students to learn about things that interest them. New Vista is within close proximity to the University of Colorado and both of the major high schools so students have the option to take classes there if the class doesn't exist at NVHS. Credit is reduced, but accepted, if one receives a C from any of these schools. New Vista is a diverse school; classes are formatted very differently than conventional high schools, are much smaller, approximately 15-30 students per class, and consist of mixed grades. Smaller classes create a better learning environment because the teacher gives more individual attention, adapts to students' learning style and helps each as an individual. In many ways these qualities let the student take control of his/her own learning and allows younger students to learn from the older more experienced students.
