Use
Kutten have found popularity in the punk subculture, especially in the street punk and crust punk scenes. Metalheads sport kutten in the NWOBHM and thrash metal scenes, as well as many other styles of classic metal, rather than the heavy metal scene as a whole. They are often adorned with patches and artwork that display band names, political affiliations, and beliefs.
Appearance
Kutten were primarily made from denim jackets with their arms removed or cut very short; in the case of many-pocketed jackets often some were cut away to gain more space for the patches. Some users even went to the length of creating new internal pockets with denim fabric from old jeans. Kutten in the 80s were almost always blue; thrash metallers favored heavily washed denim, while members of a British motorcycle club did bleach their until they got almost white. From the mid to late 90s, the growing popularity of multi-pocketed hunting/fishing vests has led many punks and metalheads to adopt them as kuttes, both in plain colours and camouflage patterns.
